Bonk!!!
by
Mike Darweesh
Bonk is a simple new shareware game inspired by the gopher games in some video
arcades–the ones where you “Bonk” the gophers on the head with a soft mallet.
Setup:
First, you must decide which version is appropriate for you. There is a Black and
White version and a 256 Color version included in this archive. If you have a
Macintosh and Monitor which support 256 colors, I recommend the 256 color one (I
love stating the obvious-sorry). If your Macintosh doesn’t do color, then the Black
and White version is fun too. Both versions play at the same speed–on any
Macintosh, so, if you score 2 billion while playing the Color version on a Mac IIfx, it
is just as amazing as if you scored the same on a Mac 512KE(of course, I’m gonna
wanna use the IIfx before the 512, but through rain, through snow, through slowness
of a Mac 512KE, Bonk will play just fine). By the way, this game does not contain any
artificial flavors or colors. Bonk isn’t fattening and it doesn’t put any additional files in
your system folder.
Game Play:
If you’d like, I’ll make the section headers bigger, but anyway, on with the show.
The game is fairly simple and there is an instructions box that can be accessed from
the about box if you forget. The first screen that you will see when you start-up Bonk
is the level selection screen. To select your starting level, click on the appropriately
numbered box. If you’d like Bonk to stay at that level of difficulty for the duration of this
game, switch the “Freeze Level” button “on” by clicking on it. The object of the game
is to Bonk as many of the funny looking guys on the head as you can without letting
them escape and NO!, it isn’t a self portrait...I have hair and ears. George (the guy
who you’re supposed to Bonk on the head) will eventually duck away. Try to click on
him before he leaves or else he’ll laugh at you and his escape will be added to the
number of “Escaped” guys. If you let ten guys escape, not only will you be laughed
at plentifully, your game will be over. When you Bonk George a sufficient number of
times, the level of difficulty will increase (if you didn’t set “Level Freeze” as
previously described). He will pop in and out much quicker as the level progresses,
but don’t fear, you have a special weapon. To throw an experimental AG42 bomb,
press the space bar. This will wipe-out all of the guys showing at that time. You only
get one bomb per level, but you may save them up throughout the game. Use them
wisely, you’ll need them at the higher levels.
There is one feature that I should need to explain in the Bonk Menu. To increase the
level by one (to a maximum of 6), use the “Increment Level” menu item (command-I
will also work). That’s about it for directions. Simple, isn’t it?
Oops, I almost forgot. Some of the bombs may be duds…
Pizza:
I really didn’t think that the header “Shareware” would get your attention.
This game is Shareware. I could write an essay about how I’m a poor college student.
I could try to give you a legal lecture. Instead, I’ll make it simple. I’ve put a lot of time
into it to make sure that everything works. You may distribute this program and
accompanying documentation freely as long as you don’t charge for the distribution
(user’s groups should contact me before they add this program to their archives
and/or distribute it) but if you play this game more than once, I’d like to see a $10
check with your name on it. If you find a bug and send me a check for $10 and a
description of the bug, I GUARANTEE that I will do my best to fix it and send you the
new version. So please, send me the $10 along with any recommendations that you
have for this game. If I get a good response, I will be publishing many more
shareware games in the future. If not, I’ll make sure that you have to pay commercial
prices for my next game. Think of it this way...If you buy a pizza from me today at $10,
I’ll make sure your next one is $10 and not $39 plus shipping and handling.
Late Note: If you’re interested in obtaining the Think C source code, send me $25 and
I’ll send you a disk with the latest source.
Fun:
I hope you find this game fun. The easy levels should be playable by anyone who
can use a Macintosh–even a two-year-old. One of my ßeta Testers was two–at least
mentally. The reason that I put the “Freeze Level” feature in is so that you may freeze
the level and only increase the difficulty (via the “Increment Level” menu option),
when you’re ready to proceed. If you have any ideas for sounds, pictures, additional
features, or other games, send them to me with your Shareware check. I’ll do what I
can in my plethera of free time.
Compatibility:
The Black and White version of Bonk should work on any Macintosh that has enough
free memory (about 256K at last count).
The color version should work on any Macintosh with at least one 256 (or more) color
or greyscale monitor.
Both should be 32-bit and A/UX compatible but require at least system 6.0.2.
If you experience ANY compatibility problems, I would like to know. Most likely, I will
be able to fix them and get back to you reasonably quickly. The only major
compatibility problem that I had was the fact that I only had a Mac II, Plus, and IIcx
readily available to test Bonk.
